Show Up, Stand Out: How to Nail Your Interview with a Recruiter

Article Published 13 Feb 2025 / By Angelina Howe

As an Agency recruiter, I’ve seen it all—candidates who walk into an interview and absolutely own it 💪, and others who don’t quite realise how much that first impression matters 😬. Whether you’re making a move in your career or exploring new opportunities, how you show up speaks volumes about your professionalism and commitment.

An interview with me isn’t just a casual chat. It’s your chance to prove why you’re the perfect fit for the job. Think of it as the first step toward making your next career move 🚀. My job is to connect you with roles that align with your skills and aspirations, but I can’t do that effectively if you’re not bringing your A-game. How you present yourself—both in attitude and appearance—matters. If I’m not convinced you’re ready, it’s tough for me to confidently champion you to potential employers.

1. We Partner with Organisations to Find the Best Talent (That’s Where You Come In!) 🤝

I work closely with businesses to understand exactly what they need in their next hire, and it’s my job to present them with the best possible candidates—which could be you! But here’s the deal: I need to get to know you. Not just on paper, but in person.

And let’s talk about that for a second—COVID as we knew it is no longer, and while Teams and Zoom have their place, there’s absolutely a place for real, human interaction. If you can’t make the effort to meet with me face-to-face, I have to be honest—it’s going to be much harder for you to stand out compared to someone I’ve actually met. A handshake, a bit of banter, and a real conversation go a long way in building trust. Plus, let’s be real—do you really want to be one of a hundred faces in a Zoom window? Didn’t think so. 😆

2. Read the Instructions—Every Detail Matters 📝

It sounds simple, but you’d be surprised how many candidates skim over important details. Whether it’s an email with interview logistics, a job description, or an assessment, take the time to read and understand everything. If a recruiter or employer sends you documents to review, complete, or bring to the interview, follow those instructions carefully.

📌 Pro Tip: Attention to detail shows that you’re organised, serious, and capable of following through—key qualities every employer values.

3. Dress the Part (and Feel the Part!) 👔👗

You don’t have to be in a full suit, but showing up polished and put together makes a big difference. A well-thought-out outfit says I take this seriously. And it’s not just about what you wear—it’s about the energy you bring. Confidence, engagement, and a professional attitude go a long way.

🔹 Look sharp, feel sharp
🔹 Dress appropriately for the industry
🔹 A smile goes a long way! 😃

4. Be on Time (or Early!)

Punctuality is non-negotiable. Arriving late is an instant red flag 🚩, and honestly, it just creates unnecessary stress for you. Plan ahead, aim to arrive early, and give yourself time to settle. Walking in composed and ready will help you start strong.

✅ Plan your route in advance
✅ Aim to arrive at least 10 minutes early
✅ Give yourself time to breathe before you walk in

5. Professionalism Is in the Details 🎯

From how you greet the receptionist to how you engage in conversation, every interaction counts. Employers aren’t just looking for skills—they’re looking for people who are genuine, respectful, and easy to work with.

💡 A little courtesy goes a long way! Shake hands, make eye contact, and listen actively.

6. Show You Can Adapt 🔄

Employers value candidates who are open to learning and growth. Flexibility isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a mindset. Demonstrating that you can evolve with a role, take on new challenges, and bring fresh ideas makes you a much stronger contender.

🧐 Be open to feedback
💡 Show willingness to learn
📈 Highlight how you’ve adapted in past roles

7. Make It Easy for Me to Champion You 🏆

My job is to help you land a great role, but I need to know you’re ready for it. When you come prepared, engaged, and excited about the opportunity, I can confidently present you to my clients. The more you bring to the table, the more I can advocate for you.

✨ Be proactive
✨ Show enthusiasm
✨ Own your story

A Recruiter’s Role: More Than Just One Job 🔍

I’m not just thinking about a single role for you—I’m constantly considering how your skills fit across multiple opportunities. When you make a great impression, you’re not just in the running for one job; you’re positioning yourself for future roles as well.

💼 Today’s opportunity could lead to tomorrow’s dream job!

Your Personal Brand Matters 🌟

Every interaction—your resume, the way you communicate, your attitude—builds your professional brand. Employers don’t just hire skills; they hire people. So, show up as the best version of yourself and make them take notice.

🖋 Keep your LinkedIn up to date
📢 Communicate clearly and confidently
🤝 Build relationships, not just contacts

Final Thoughts 🎬

You don’t need to be perfect, but you do need to be prepared. Show enthusiasm, put in the effort, and take the process seriously. By doing so, you’re not just impressing me—you’re opening doors to bigger and better opportunities.

🚀 Take a deep breath, step in with confidence, and let’s make your next move happen. You’ve got this! 💪
