Show Up, Stand Out: How to Nail Your Interview with a Recruiter

Article Published 13 Feb 2025 / By Angelina Howe

As an Agency Recruiter, I’ve Seen It All!

I’ve met candidates who walk into an interview and absolutely own it 💪—and others who don’t quite grasp just how much that first impression counts 😬. Whether you’re actively job hunting or just exploring your options, how you present yourself speaks volumes about your professionalism and commitment.

An interview with ME isn’t just a casual chat. It’s your opportunity to showcase your skills and allow me to help you find the perfect fit. Think of it as the first step toward landing your next big opportunity 🚀. My role is to connect you with positions that align with your expertise and career goals—but I can’t do that effectively if you’re not bringing your A-game. How you present yourself—on paper, in person, through your attitude, communication style, and even your appearance—matters. If I’m not convinced you’re ready, it’s tough for me to confidently champion you to potential employers.

1. We Partner with Organisations to Find the Best Talent (That’s Where You Come In!) 🤝

I work closely with businesses to understand exactly what they need in their next hire. My job is to present them with the best possible candidates—which could be you! But for that to happen, I need to get to know you—not just from your resume, but in person.

And let’s be real for a second—COVID as we knew it is over. While Teams and Zoom have their place, nothing replaces real human interaction. If you can’t make the effort to meet with me face-to-face, I have to be honest—it’s going to be harder for you to stand out against candidates I’ve actually sat down with. A handshake, a bit of banter, and a genuine conversation go a long way in building trust. Do you really want to be just another name on a screen? Didn’t think so. 😆

2. Read the Instructions—Every Detail Matters 📝

This one’s simple, yet so many candidates miss it. Whether it’s an email with interview details, a job description, or an assessment, take the time to read and understand everything. If an employer asks you to complete forms or bring documents, follow those instructions carefully. And we’re doing the same! So if you’re not thorough with me, how can I be sure you’ll be thorough with our clients???

📌 Pro Tip: Attention to detail signals that you’re organised, reliable, and can follow through—qualities every employer values.

3. Dress the Part (and Feel the Part!) 👔👗

Meeting with your Recruiter is still an important step in the process. You don’t have to show up in a three-piece suit, but putting effort into your appearance sends a clear message: I take this seriously. I want to see how you’ll present yourself at our client’s site—what you think is appropriate.

And let’s be clear, it’s not just about what you wear—it’s about the energy you bring. Confidence, engagement, and a professional attitude go a long way.

🔹 Look sharp, feel sharp.

🔹 Dress appropriately for your industry.

🔹 A smile goes a long way! 😃

4. Be on Time (or Early!) ⏰

Punctuality is non-negotiable. Showing up late? 🚩 Instant red flag. It creates unnecessary stress—for both of us. Plan ahead, give yourself buffer time, and walk in composed and ready.

✅ Map out your route in advance.

✅ Aim to arrive at least 10 minutes early.

✅ Give yourself a moment to breathe before stepping in.

5. Professionalism is in the Details 🎯

From how you greet the receptionist to how you engage in conversation—every interaction matters. Employers aren’t just hiring skills; they’re hiring people—people who are genuine, respectful, and easy to work with. And guess what? That’s exactly what I’m looking for when I meet you.

💡 A little courtesy goes a long way! Shake hands, make eye contact, and listen actively.

6. Make It Easy for Me to Champion You 🏆

My job is to help you land a great role, but I need to know you’re ready for it. When you come prepared, engaged, and excited about the opportunity, I can confidently present you to my clients. The more you bring to the table, the more I can advocate for you.

I always tell my candidates—you should feel comfortable that I know you well enough to represent you. That only happens if you’re open, honest, and share your story with me.

✨ Be proactive.

✨ Show enthusiasm.

✨ Own your story.

A Recruiter’s Role: More Than Just One Job 🔍

When I meet you, I’m not just thinking about the role in front of me—I’m considering how your skills fit across multiple opportunities. Making a great impression today could put you in the running for future roles tomorrow.

💼 One meeting could open doors you never expected!

Your Personal Brand Matters 🌟

Every interaction—your resume, the way you communicate, your attitude—builds your professional brand. Employers don’t just hire skills; they hire people. Show up as the best version of yourself and make us take notice.

🖋 Keep your LinkedIn up to date.

📢 Communicate clearly and confidently.

🤝 Build relationships, not just contacts.

Final Thoughts

You don’t need to be perfect, but you do need to be prepared. Show enthusiasm, put in the effort, and take the process seriously. You’re not just impressing me—you’re opening doors to bigger and better opportunities.

🚀 Take a deep breath, bring your best self, and let’s make your next career move happen. You’ve got this! 💪
